There's no disputing the sheer elegance of this Brixham trawler. But soon after steam powered vessels came into use, sail powered fishing vessels were either converted to steam, scrapped, or preserved for their beauty, their historical value and for the sheer pleasure of sailing and racing them. Sail powered fishing boats just couldn't compete with steam. And they didn't have a chance against diesel. And now, there are fewer fish than ever. Diesel powered trawlers are armed with sophisticated equipment for finding the fish, controlling the nets and handling the catch - maximising efficiency. Is it possible that a sail boat could work as an economically viable fishing boat today? We think so. And given the volatility of fuel prices, uncertainty in the economy, the implications of peak oil and climate change, sail powered fishing will be even more important tomorrow. So what kind of boat might do the job? You may be surprised! |
